What Should I Look for When Buying a Computer?

People always ask me that question in this article I will explain what to look for in purchasing a computer. Sales people in store will often sell you things you do not need.
Example had a friend that just purchased a computer she was sold a 64 bit model. The problem with that is there is hardly any software written today take advantage of this the average home user would not see much of a benefit from this.
Apple or windows recommend that you choose Windows unless your job has Apple machines. Because Apple computers are highly proprietary, which means for most parts you must by them from Apple. And there is more software written for Windows, but this also has drawbacks most viruses are written for windows machines.
But windows machines on average cost substantially less to obtain.
Then you have to decide what you are going to use the computer for and buy the hardware you are going to need.
If you are going to play the latest and greatest games you will need a video card of at least 128 megabytes, stay away from onboard video or shared video also.
If I had to choose between larger RAM (random access memory) higher speed CPU (microprocessor) would recommend that you go with the larger ram hands down. Machines with larger ram run quicker.
Also if you want to surf the Internet be sure the machine has an Ethernet connection. So you can connect with DSL or cable high speed internet access. If you connect with dial up and want to surf the web your computer will be slow.
If you want to record live TV or save family videos you are going to need allot of hard drive space. Another thing is if you are going to be mobile be sure and get a laptop or note book computer. Also look at the warranty you get with the machine and will somebody be there to help you if you call up and if its onsite or you have to bring the machine in.
Finally ask friends and colleagues what they are using.
